Square, which is the most sociable shape there is.
A section is one square mile — the unit Texas was surveyed in. Four equal sides, four equal seats, everybody facing in. Nobody is at the head because there isn’t one.
Most tables taper the other way — narrow at the bottom, so the piece looks light. This one doesn’t. The four legs splay out as they drop, planted, and the table reads braced rather than balanced. It’s the table you picture in a chow hall: solid, and built to be eaten at every day by people who aren’t being careful.
Honest notes
- The Section seats four comfortably and eight at a push, but the middle is further away than it looks.
- The legs are wider at the floor than at the top, so the footprint down there is almost as big as the tabletop.
- Give it two weeks before you’re rough with it. The oil finish takes fourteen days to cure — keep it dry and out of direct sun until then.
- Oak takes stain and we offer four finishes. Maple and walnut are finished natural, because they’re better that way.
- Solid wood moves. Seasonal change across the width is expected, not a fault.
