What We Believe
Trust is our most valuable product. Every decision we make either earns it or spends it.
That reads like a slogan. It isn't one — it's the test we actually run things through, and this page is what it means in practice.
Exactly what we promised
When your piece arrives you should open the box and feel something closer to joy than relief. Not well, it's not as bad as the photos suggested. Not I suppose that's the wood they meant.
So the photographs on this site are photographs. Real wood, real grain, real light, of the thing you're actually buying. We don't render. We don't retouch away a knot. Where a wood varies — and it always varies — we show you the variation rather than the one flattering board.
The materials are what we say they are. Solid hardwood the whole way through, not veneer over particle board. The finish is named on every product page, and it's the same food-safe oil on a coffee table as on a cutting board.
We won't make it worse to make it cheaper
There's a version of this business where we take a quarter inch off the tops, switch to a finish that sprays faster, and nobody notices for two years. That version makes more money. We're not running it.
Growth is welcome. It isn't welcome at the cost of the standard. If we ever have to choose between the two, the standard wins and we stay smaller.
Furniture should solve a problem before it makes a statement
The Torch side table is nine inches deep because there's a gap beside your sofa that a normal side table won't fit. That's the whole idea. It happens to be good-looking, but good-looking came second.
Good design is quiet. It serves. A piece that shouts about itself is usually compensating for not being much use.
You deserve not to be taken advantage of
In practice that means:
- No invented sales. Our prices are our prices. We don't inflate a number so we can discount it later, and there's no "was $329" theatre.
- Shipping at cost. Calculated by weight, and it's what the carrier charges us. No handling fee on top.
- Cancel free until we start cutting. After that we ask only for the wood we've already bought and cut for you.
- If we get it wrong, we fix it and we pay for the fixing.
None of that is generous. It's what it looks like when a company isn't trying to win the last twenty dollars from you.
Profit is what lets us keep doing this
We're a business and we intend to be a profitable one. But profit is the fuel, not the destination. It buys better lumber, keeps the shop open, and pays for the ability to say no to work that isn't right.
What we'd like to be known for
Not they make beautiful furniture. Plenty of people make beautiful furniture.
We'd like to be known as the company that kept its word.
