A cutting board that sits up off the counter.

Hardwood for the surface, and feet underneath so it lifts clear. That last part is the whole idea — it gets your fingers under it, keeps it off a wet counter, and turns a board into something you can carry to the table and serve from.

Honest notes

• Hard maple takes a knife well and shows the marks. It is meant to look used.
• Feet mean it doesn’t sit flush, so it isn’t the board to lean on for heavy chopping. Use it for bread, cheese, anything you’re carrying.
• Never the dishwasher. Wash by hand, dry standing up, and re-oil when it looks thirsty.
• Food-safe mineral oil, which is the right finish for something handled this often. It wants topping up now and then — a cloth and a few minutes, no stripping and no sanding.
