A band of wood under the top, all the way round.
The legs sit at the corners, flush with the edge, and an apron runs between them on all four sides. Top and apron together read as one thick slab rather than a panel sitting on a frame — a hard layer capping the thing underneath, which is what a caprock is.
It is very solid-looking and the one that holds up best in a formal room. The apron also stiffens the whole frame, so this is the one to choose if the table is going to get pushed around.
Honest notes
- The apron costs you a little knee room, and it is the reason to measure before you buy. A dining chair with arms may not slide underneath. Check the height of your chair arms against the underside of the apron, not the top.
- Nothing clamps to the edge — no table leaf, no high chair, no bench vice.
- Heavier than it looks. Two people to move it.
- Give it two weeks before you’re rough with it. The oil finish takes fourteen days to cure — keep it dry and out of direct sun until then.
- Oak takes stain and we offer four finishes. Maple and walnut are finished natural, because they’re better that way.
